Wemindji, about 1,400 kilometers from Montreal, is accessible by both land and air.
When traveling by land, make your way to the James Bay highway via Montreal. Turn off at kilometer 518 and follow the well-maintained gravel road for about 95 kilometers, after which you will reach Wemindji.
Wemindji is accessible by Air Creebec, a Cree-owned airline. Flights to Wemindji are available via this airline from Trudeau Airport in Montreal, Chibougamau/Chapais Airport in Chibougamau, Val d’Or Airport in Northern Quebec, or Timmins Victor M. Power Airport in Ontario. The flight time from Montreal to Wemindji is about 5 hours.
We have a variety of cultural events that we will share on our Facebook page that happen throughout the year in our community. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join! For example, come to our annual pow wow in early August — you will have the chance to discover the traditional songs and dances, festive foods, and wonderful people of Wemindji.
Pack for all seasons. Being in Northern Canada, things can vary pretty widely (that is, it gets cold here at night, even in August). If you are coming in summer, go ahead and bring those shorts and sandals, but remember to pack long pants and a coat as well.
Our best advice is to dress for the weather! Conditions can change, so if in doubt, bring an extra layer. Be prepared to be active and comfortable by wearing clothes that allow you to move. Jeans are not advisable – we recommend that you wear leggings, non-restrictive shorts, or sport pants.
It’s pretty variable. Temperatures can get up to about 30°C (86°F) but also drop pretty low in the evenings, so come prepared!
The Maquatua Inn — where our office is located and one of our partners — is a modern two-star hotel that offers clean and comfortable lodging for any traveler coming to Wemindji. Book your stay on their website.
